Watchmen Graphic Novel Should be Left a Comic Book

Started in 1986, writer Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons formulate a mystery based on the Cold War, wherein the threat of nuclear warfare is an imminent fear. The story explores the possibility that superheroes existed in the 1940s. Thus, in the setting of the Watchmen graphic novel, superheroes are roughly classified into two. They are either working for the government, donning their suits while on retainer by people�s taxes, or they are outlawed. Most superheroes not working for the government have decided to embark on other productive endeavors like business, leaving crime-fighting and costume-wearing behind. Some continue to be heroes, but are considered as fugitives, thanks to the law that was passed outlawing superheroes.

Creator Alan Moore cannot be blamed for wanting his art to remain in the chosen medium it was created. Not only due to the huge differences between perusing a comic book and watching a film, but undeniably also because of the harrowing experiences he had with his publisher and the process of converting his work from paper to film. Initially, he thought that separating himself from the process of converting his work to a movie would turn out fine. Moore admits that he was wrong about distancing himself. The latest of his work to be released as a movie is the Watchmen graphic novel.

�The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen,� one of Moore�s works, was adapted into film. He distanced himself, feeling that as long as he didn�t see any of the film and had nothing to do with it, everything will be fine. He was fairly surprised when producer Martin Poll and writer Larry Cohen filed a law suit against 20th Century Fox for alleged plagiarism. They claim that their script yet to be produced was copied. Indeed, the two scripts bore many similarities, but these are elements added to the film and were not in any way found in Moore�s comics. Due to the lawsuit, Alan Moore had to testify in a deposition. The experience, he described, is incomparable and shockingly painful. As if the misery was not enough, Fox settled the case, signaling to Moore that it was an admission of guilt, something he was very sure he has no involvement.

When �V for Vendetta� was made into a film, producer Joel Silver stated to the press that fellow producer Larry Wachowski had talked with Alan Moore, and that Moore was excited about the project. But according to Moore, he adamantly refused to be part of anything with films, and still wasn�t interested in Hollywood. Alan Moore wanted a public retraction and an apology. While he got an apology from Silver, who appears also been deceived by Wachowski, there never was a public retraction. Aside from this, Moore claims that the comic book was specifically about anarchy and fascism. Nowhere in the movie was these two things even seen or mentioned. Clearly, the adaptation of the comic book into a film reinvents Moore�s work into something totally different, something Moore would have not created and would definitely not want to be credited with.

The Watchmen graphic novel is being adapted into a film, and is set for release this 2009. Everybody can understand the reluctance and displeasure by Alan Moore. It is bad enough that he doesn�t get paid for his work, now he gets his name attached to work inherently at odds with what and who Alan Moore is.

Smallville: Chloe Sullivan Comes to Comic Books

fter years of adapting many elements and components of Superman from its original comics genre to television’s Smallville, the magazine has finally taken one of Smallville’s own characters to become part of an upcoming issue. Chloe Sullivan, played by Allison Mack on The CW cult series, debuts in Superman issue 674, which hits stands on March 12.



Comic book writer Kurt Busiek told Newsarama recently that he took inspiration from another Superman character, Jimmy Olsen, who also made the leap from one medium to another. According to Busiek, Jimmy was first introduced into Superman lore on the 1940 radio show called The Adventures of Superman. It was only a year later that his character was incorporated into the comic book.



“It made me think, ‘Yeah, and the next obvious choice would be bringing in someone like Chloe, but the problem with that would be...' and then bam, a way to do it fell into place that I thought really served the book well, and made her a strong and useful and fun addition to the cast. One that would give us several elements to the cast structure that have been missing for years, but in a new and different way," Busiek revealed.

One sticking point however, in the move to deliver Chloe from Smallville to Superman 674, has to do with rendering her in such a way as to look like Chloe, without appearing too much like actress Allison Mack. This has to do with issues surrounding likeness rights that need to be taken into consideration. Another challenge was to find a niche for the Chloe character, without overlapping with those that are already firmly set in the Superman comic book universe.

“The problem we'd have faced if we brought her in with the same background as the TV show is that she'd fill two basic roles - the Girl from Back Home and the Reporter - and those roles are both pretty solidly filled in the adult Superman cast, by Lana and Lois," Busiek explained. "So she's got to have a different spin, one that lets her occupy a different role from either of them. She's the younger sister of someone Clark went to school with, not a classmate of Clark 's herself. As a result, she's the new intern at the Daily Planet, fresh out of journalism school and itching to make a name for herself. That'll make her clearly different from Lois and Lana, and at the same time more familiar to watchers of the show.”

And Marvel Comics’ Spider-Girl, featuring Spider-Man’s daughter, May Parker, which was saved from cancellation three times thanks to fan support.

In the early 2000s, Crossgen Comics also created several books with strong female leads, like Sojourn, Meridian and Crux, that forced other companies to take another look at their own female comic book characters. Today, Ms. Marvel and Catwoman are both doing well with their own titles, and Image’s Bomb Queen has had several mini-series and continues to carry a strong fan base. And when mentioned female comic book characters, one can’t forget Aspen Comics’ Aspen Matthews and her book Fathom, which became popular in the 90s and still has a strong following even though it’s not currently producing many issues.

The rise of strong female comic book characters, especially in superhero comics, is obviously intended to extend the audience beyond the typical target market, giving female readers something to relate to as well. "Even Children's Comic Book Makers Do It..."

Well, in Japan, anyway.

Comic book makers for schoolgirls and boys in Japan offer different fare to boys and girls…so that BOTH groups buy those comics like crazy, not just the traditional boy market.

In their June "Japanese Schoolgirl Watch," Wired magazine notes, "Anyone who thinks schoolgirls and boys enjoy the same fantasies needs to bone up on shojo manga." The Japanese comics for gals are the antitheses of typical boy titles, they write.

"In the series for guys, Dragon Ball Z, for example, robots are death machines and sound effects of pitched battles (bwa-whoom!) are common. In the series for girls, like Absolute Boyfriend, bots (=robots) are cute guys…stories get interspersed with shopping tips on clothes and cosmetics…"

Note that even the titles fit the gender preferences – so that each group will buy them. Dragon Ball Z, vs Boyfriend. Dragons versus friends. Pitched battles versus caring for the bots (guys) and the giving of tips to look better. And they sell so many comics to both groups that they're translated into English now.

The different marketing approach designed for schoolgirls versus the boys was the focus of the piece in Wired.

Don't such preferences grow stronger inside most children as they become adults?

The recruiting and sales training practices of nearly every company I know focuses on the male style and idolizes the accomplishments that only full time men or women can attain (read: big money). Rather than developing approaches to fit women, who are 80% of our sales force and customer base, and most of whom are 5-10 hours per week, I guess they figure the male way is enough.

How we doing so far? Well, does the 95% drop out rate tell us anything? Remember that 80% of the people IN the business are women, so we know who's dropping out, yes?

Madison Avenue is trying to catch up, too. Women, 51% of the US population today, are suddenly the majority. There are BOOKS about marketing to this new majority "Marketing to Women".

Shall we catch up, too, for the benefit of the 10.4 million women trying to create something of their own in network marketing?

Essential Comics for Non-comic Book Readers

Comic book fans have been preaching it for years: comics are not just for kids. This should be old hat by now. So rather than trying to entice non-comic readers to read comics, let’s first explore the medium of comics and what makes it unique.



When you read a book, you are creating images in your mind based on the words. That’s why a good writer can convey a complex image easily and understandably. The beauty of books is that ten people reading the same book may come up with ten different images based on how their minds shaped the words.



Movies tend to be just the opposite. The pictures and dialogue are given to us with very little left to the imagination. Movies are straightforward and to the point. Those same ten people from the book example certainly saw the same images of a film.



Comic books are a unique combination of the two. Forget about content for a second. Comics can do what no other medium can; the combination of words and art in a sequential format tell a story and evoke feelings that other formats, in their attempt to conjure the same feelings, would have failed miserably. That isn’t to say comic characters can’t be in good movies. They can. However, the emotion and feeling from reading Grant Morrison’s Arkham Asylum could not be duplicated on the big screen. Same goes for Neil Gaiman’s Sandman and Kurt Busiek’s Marvels. For further information on this unique medium, I highly suggest Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics.



Now, with that out of the way, here are five creators who have written several series and/or graphic novels that non-comics readers would enjoy and find thought provoking:



Alan Moore. Yes, Watchmen is on everyone’s list and yes, it should be. A fantastic use of the medium and an entertaining story as well. But Moore has such a rich bibliography that I hate to confine it to just the one classic. League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and From Hell are also classics, and certainly not for children. His entire line of ABC Comics is worth a read. Even finding his individual stories (there are several compilations on the market) is worth it.



Grant Morrison. My personal favorite, he tends to be a little “out there” for some. But I find his stories to be contextually rich with symbolism and sequences that stay with me for days. I highly recommend The Invisibles, We 3, Seven Soldiers mini-series, and his run on Doom Patrol, Animal Man and Justice League. Graphic novels include Sebastian O, The Mystery Play and Arkham Asylum.



Neil Gaiman. Noted mostly for his outstanding Sandman run, which I highly recommend, Gaiman also wrote the underrated graphic novel Murder Mysteries.



Greg Rucka. I include Rucka on this list for his outstanding characterization in the Queen & Country series and the wonderful mystery, Whiteout. Both series have several moments where you realize that the comic medium was the only way to get these stories to work best.



Bill Willingham. A somewhat controversial pick for this list, however I wanted to include him due to his unbelievable work on Fables. It’s one of those concepts that have writers everywhere smacking their heads saying “why didn’t I think of that.” Entertaining and engrossing, this series will have you reading fairy tales to your children in a whole different light.



So there are several titles worth checking out (most available from local libraries), most of them worth reading over and over again. Remember, comics may have initially been directed at a young audience, but those days are over. Open your mind and enjoy the unique feeling that comics offer and you’ll be richer for the experience.

Comics For Extra Credit - Part 2

My first post about comics as an educational aid generated an interesting response - from the managing director of Classical Comics, a comic book company in the United Kingdom. Not to be confused with Classic Comics, often teasingly referred to as a study guide for college literature classes here in the State, Classical Comics turns classical literature into high-quality visual graphic novels.

Founded two and a half years ago, Classical Comics first title was Henry the V in November, 2007, followed by the launch of a Macbeth graphic novel in February, 2008. The Macbeth title received the endorsement of Shakespearean actor, and former Star Trek, The Next Generationstar Patrick Stewart. Upcoming titles for the remainder of 2008 include: Jane Eyre, Frankenstein, and a Christmas Carol. Seven new titles are planned for 2009.

Unlike prior educational efforts, Classical Comics' titles come in four text options: the original text of the play or novel, plain text translation, a quick text for younger readers, and, a blank text where readers may fill in the captions and bubbles. The first titles are also accompanied by detailed study guides, aimed at the British equivalent of grades kindergarten through middle school. While the titles are too new for the company to have collected readership data, the original version would be likely targeted at ninth and tenth graders with the translations to be more popular with younger readers. I will know better shortly, as the company has shipped me a box of the titles. I have been warned that it will be a very heavy box!

Classical Comics' managing director Karen Wenborn, a marketer and self-professed avid reader said that the first titles have been well-received because of their high visual quality, substantial feel (gloss paper, much like hardbound graphic novels) and efforts to be true to the period of the story. From viewing covers for the titles at Classical Comics' website, artwork and action are quite similar to the modern superhero genre. Wenborn pointed out that past efforts to represent classical literature in comics have faltered because the artwork had not been kept up to date; she added that while those titles are being reprinted in the original art, their largest market in the U.K is nostalgia buffs, as opposed to students and educators.

I agree with Karen that visual quality is essential for the success of these titles. Super heroes are actually "old" characters in the United States, for instance, Batman and Superman characters from the 1940's. Spiderman, Hulk and Ironman are creations from the early 1960's. Yet these titles succeed, not because they have been made into cartoons and movies, but because their look has been considerably freshened up to appeal to adults (who bought the titles as kids) as well as children. Characters from the 1940's and 1960's have had to keep up with the times, as well as technology.

A graphic novel of a classic book, by comparison, does not need to be "updated," but artistic techniques, combined with historical research, make the story truer to the time it took place. The reader will be comparing their first exposure to these stories with movies that use computer-generated images. A plain text book with no illustrations or one of the original comics will appear dull compared to the visual representations kids see today in comics, video games and movies.

However, Karen explained that Classical Comics are more expensive to produce than similar graphic novels because of the research required for powerful visual effects as well as translations. I see only two obstacles to success: cost to schools versus a more traditional book (which is serious in times of tight budgets in U.S. public schools) and past beliefs about comics among individual educators. I have to ask if librarians might be a stronger market for U.S. expansion; they are more likely to promote the entertainment value of reading than teachers. However, if I were a teacher, and especially if I were the head of a high school English department, I would be trying to negotiate a fair price on original and basic text versions of these books. I know they would entice students to read other titles on their own.

Karen told me that the titles have been very well received in the U.K; they have received the endorsement of Shakespeare for Kidz, an international non-profit organization that provides Shakespeare education to children through a variety of media, and the National Association for the Teaching of English.

Comic-Con...it's not just about comic books

It's the ultimate. The extreme. The biggest event in the world if you're a sci-fi fantasy enthusiast, comic or video artist! It's the one and only Comic-Con in San Diego.

From July 20th through the 24th, over 100,000 attendees, industry professionals and countless exhibitors will converge in the San Diego Convention center. Aspiring artists will meet at Artist's Alley and take part in Comic-Con's Portfolio Review. Autograph hounds will mob the Autograph area to meet cast members from their favorite TV shows and movies.

On Saturday, the beloved and venerated Ray Bradbury will be signing autographs from 2 to three p.m. Bradbury is the author of such timeless classics as The Illustrated Man, Something Wicked This Way Comes, The Martian Chronicles, and Fahrenheit 451. Some of these great works have been adapted into comic book and cinematic form. His biography, The Bradbury Chronicles, The Life of Ray Bradbury, was recently released in paperback.

Also attending will be Roger Corman, an indie filmmaking legend and who has spent over 50 years in Hollywood. In addition to creating such iconic classics as Little Shop of Horrors film, Roger Corman also mentored some of Hollywood's top talent --including directors like Ron Howard and James Cameron.

Trekkers will gather around the autograph table of Walter Koenig, one of Star Trek's original TV crew members—Chekov. Besides creating an unforgettable character in the original series and the seven movies that followed, Koenig also appeared on Babylon 5 and is an accomplished writer and filmmaker.

Returning to Comic-Con International this year will be The Star Wars Fan Film Awards. The award ceremony scheduled for Thursday night at 8:30 in Ballroom 20 will showcase the best of this year's competition, plus an exclusive world premiere especially for Star Wars fans. For the fifth year, filmmaker finalists vied for recognition and prizes in the competition sponsored by Lucasfilm and Atomfilms.com.

George Lucas will judge which film entry is the best of the competition will present the prestigious George Lucas Selects top prize, receive $2,000 in cash and a distinctive Fan Film Awards trophy. Other category winners will be awarded one of the coveted trophies, plus $1,000. The Audience Choice Award will go to the highest number of votes from the fans themselves. The winner will take home one of the Fan Film trophies. Attendees will also be treated to the very first public showing of Return of Pink Five: Volume Two. Films entered in the Star Wars Fan Film Awards competition are required to meet set guidelines and performance standards, plus be less than 10 minutes long. The films can be a parody of the existing Star Wars universe, experimental, or a documentary of the Star Wars fan experience.

For Anime fans, Comic-Con is a true feast. Anime, or Japanese animation, as many know, has grown to become one of the fastest-growing aspects of Comic-Con. Screenings continue to gather record-setting crowds. This year, Comic-Con's anime will include over 130 different titles, including popular fan favorites, newer releases, and sneak previews of soon to be releases. As always, Comic-Con will provide a convenient guide to the schedule with room locations and brief synopses and titles.

Comic Books What They Used to be

IT ALL began with The Yellow Kid. This was a humorous cartoon feature that began appearing in the New York World back in 1896. It became enormously popular. Soon newspaper readers were also amused by the antics of the likes of Foxy Grandpa, Buster Brown and The Katzenjammer Kids. The funnies were born.

And funny they were. The titles alone reveal the mirth embodied in these cartoon creations: Happy Hooligan, Maude the Mule, Mutt and Jeff, Krazy Kat, and so forth. These playful characters well reflected the innocence of the age before the climactic year of 1914. In retrospect, however, perhaps not everything was truly funny. The popular Katzenjammer Kids, for example, made readers howl at what has been called a systematic campaign of sabotage that successfully resists spankings, threats, and promises.

The Rise of the Superhero

Soon publishers decided to reprint some of these popular features in book form. At first, however, these comic books were merely promotional items given away by advertisers. But in 1934 publishers Wildenberg and Gaines wagered that youngsters would be willing to spend 10 cents for a comic book they called Famous Funnies. It, too, was a success. So, using artists barely out of high school, publishers waged a fierce competition for readers.

In 1938 a turning point came. The young team of Siegel and Shuster found a publisher for a comic book character they had invented Superman. According to one of his originators, he was to be a character like Samson, Hercules, and all the strong men I ever heard tell of rolled into one. Only more so. This man of steel captured the imaginations of young and old. Soon the monthly magazine was grossing a million dollars a year. And, spurred on by this success, publishers began inventing other caped crusaders.

But the next generation of comic books descended into the realms of sex, violence and horror. Graphically violent comics, such as one entitled Crime Does Not Pay, actually paid their publishers quite well. And as the 1950 s rolled around, comics also began to horrify their youthful readers with titles such as Tales From the Crypt.

In many cases, the comics no longer were comical.

The Public Protests

In 1954, Frederic Wertham s book Seduction of the Innocent indicted the comic book industry for corrupting youth. Dr. Wertham studied emotionally disturbed children and found that many of them were avid readers of comic books. Concluded Dr. Wertham, Comic book stories teach violence.

Some, however, felt that Dr. Wertham s research did not prove that comics had a bad effect on normal children. Nevertheless, at least in the United States, steps eventually were taken to police the comics industry by setting up a code restricting excessive violence and nudity. All I will say about that is the Fantastic Four movies, there was so much potential there and it all just went so terribly wrong.

The latest rumors on the new Thor Movie that is being directed by Kenneth Branagh is that he hay have the right actor to step into the role of Thor. Word has it that Alexander Skarsgard who is best known right now for his work on the HBO shows Generation Kill and True Blood is a leading candidate. Let's keep our fingers crossed that they get this movie done right. Like it or not the Hollywood studios seem to be enamored with comic books and graphic novels right now.

Comic Book Collectors' Dilemna--to Slab or not to Slab?

Do you collect comics for fun or profit? Well if you're like most collectors, it's a little of both. Regardless, if you think that one day you may sell some or all of your comics (and it seems many of us do) you may want to learn more about "slabbing." Slabbing is the process of having your comics professionally graded, and then encased between two sheets of hard plastic (some sources identify this plastic as "Barex", but there's some controversy as to what type of plastic it is). A special paper that prevents acidification is tucked into the comic as part of this process. Slabbing protects the comic from weather extremes, mositure, dust, and all the other things that can decrease a comic's value.

Collectors both love and hate slabbing--there is no middle ground. First, here's why they love it. Slabbing protects a comic indefinitely (no one knows for how long exactly, as the process is so new). Once slabbled you don't have to worry that your prized Superman, Batman, X-Men, Spiderman, or Archie comic will lose its value, or any of its "eye appeal." That's a big plus! Also the slabbing company (Comics Guaranty, LTD or CGC is the major one, although there are others) will grade your comic as part of the process. Grades are on a .5 to 10-point scale with .5 being poor and 10 being Mint. When you're looking to value and/or sell your comics it's a great advantage to have it graded. It's much easier to sell a comic if you can say it's a CGC 6.0, instead of "in my opinion it's in Fine condition." I know this from personal experience and from talking to other sellers, including those selling comics, for my book eBay PowerSeller Secrets.

Now, here's why some collectors hate slabbing. Once a comic is slabbed you can't read it! You can't take it out from between the plastic that encases it without destroying the seal that the grading company puts along the top of the case. Once that seal is broken the grade is no longer guaranteed. That makes sense because if you take it out you may change its condition somehow, thus reducing its grade. (Although I think most collectors would be careful enough not to harm their comics.) So if you are going to slab a comic you have to get used to the idea that forever it will be encased between plastic sheets. You'll still be able to see its front and back covers but you won't be able to page through it. That's a tough thing to get used to. Also, slabbing ain't cheap. Depending primarily on the comic's age it can easily set you back $50 once you figure in shipping and insurance. And here's something that's not discussed all that much: the cases get scratched easily, and when light hits those scratches your beautifully encased comic doesn't look so hot. New cases aren't as expensive as the original ones if the comics don't have to be regraded, but you still have to pay for shipping and insurance to CGC and back.

There are more pros and cons to this slabbing business but those are the main ones.

My advice? Slab Golden Age comics that are worth at least $150. (Because more modern comics are cheaper to slab, you may consider slabbing one of those if its current value is $100 or so.) It's worth the cost in the long run and at $150, a comic is a pretty valuable investment, which will likely appreciate over time. There's great peace of mind that comes from knowing your comic will not lose any value after you slab it (barring a change in market conditions, of course). If you want to be able to read your comic, you can also search the web for a PDF version of it. These are available from newsgroups devoted to the hobby. Or you can buy one of those printed compilations of old comics.

The CGC will charge a fee for grading, and then seal your comic in a plastic sleeve. A CGC rating is the only purely objective means of grading and guarantees to a potential buyer that your comic does have a certain official rating.

However, since the CGC grading costs money, it is not worthwhile to have every comic graded that way. You can learn to grade comic books yourself and for lower dollar value comic books, this is the way to go. Remember to be objective when grading your own comics, as you do not want to cheat a buyer inadvertently.

For comic books that are in less than perfect condition, you will need to look carefully at each bit of damage or wear to determine which grade the comic book should receive. Online guides or comic book collectors' magazines often have reference sheets to tell you the specifics of each grade.

It may be best to work with a more experienced collector initially, until you are more familiar with how the grading system works. He or she can show you examples of various comic grades.

How can I properly store my comic books to decrease wear and tear?

First, individually bag each comic book in Mylar. These storage bags are available from any good comic book store. You will also want to use comic book boards to prevent bending or creasing.

Purchase these individually or in bulk at your comic book store. Remember to change out your boards every few years to prevent the breakdown of the board, which can have a negative impact on your comic. Finally, you will need storage boxes.

Comic book storage boxes are available in long or short size. Long boxes are better value for the money, but if your comics must be stored in tight quarters, short boxes will give you more flexibility.

Remember to store your comic books in a climate controlled environment. Extremes of heat, cold, humidity, or dryness could have a negative impact on your comic books.

So what comic books should I buy?

The answer to that question really depends on your personal interests. Did you have a favorite comic book character as a kid or do you have one now? Seek out early editions of that character's comics or read the latest on what he or she is doing now.
